I first wrote The Sonneteer in 2014, which happened to be the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. I say 'happened to be', because that was really just a coincidence: when, the previous summer, the idea for the play came to me, I did not realise that its first production in Edinburgh would coincide with this anniversary.
The idea for the play came to me because a friend started posting a Sonnet a Day on Facebook in the run up to Christmas 2014. This quickly became one of the highlights of my day and I started looking forward to each day's sonnet.
Now, to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, I have embarked on a similar accessory project: to record all 154 of the sonnets and make them available as simple videos with the text and also as downloadable audio files.
I launched this here on 23rd April 2016, and we will post one Sonnet each day to our Facebook and Twitter feeds, so you can follow them there.
But since some of these Sonnets now form part of The Sonneteer, and the whole idea of The Sonneteer is the story behind them, I will pick one (or perhaps sometimes two, if they come in a pair) each week and do a vlog and podcast about it to put it in context. Again, you can follow Saturday's Sonnet on our Facebook or Twitter feed and also here.
